I had the following conversation with Lily this afternoon. I just wanted to post it before I forgot. I read her "All You Ever Need" by Max Lucado before nap. In it there is a picture of a woman dressed in robes and scarves, basically covered from head to foot.
Lily: "Mom, what is that lady wearing"
Me: "Robes and Scarves"
Lily: "Why is she wearing all those clothes if it is so hot there"
Me: "People in this time wore all these clothes to protect them from the sun and wind, and sand"
Lily: "Cause they didn't have houses, or cars, or ANYTHING, Right?"
Me: "They had houses, they were just very different from our houses"
Lily: "If they had houses, then why were they outside all the time"
Me: "Because, most of the work they had to do was outside. They had to grow all their own food, and raise their own cattle, chicken's, etc. They couldn't just go to the store and buy what they needed, they had to grow it all themselves."
Lily: "Why couldn't they just buy their meat from the farmers"
Me: "I guess some people could, but most people didn't have the money to do that. They were very poor."
Lily: "But God sent them meat from heaven...meat and bread"
Now, here was a little pause, because it took me a minute to realize that she was talking about when the Isrealites were wandering in the desert. God sent them Quail and Manna from Heaven.
Me: "You're right, Lily, He did. But He didn't ALWAYS do that."
Lily: "Why?"
Me: "Well...because He did that when the Isrealites were wandering in the desert, and he wanted to prove that He would be there for them and provide for them"
Lily: "Will He do that for us."
Me: "No"
Lily: "Why"
Me: "Because he doesn't do miracles any more"
Lily: "Doesn't he want to show us that he will provide for us"
I want to remind everyone here that she is 4!! I did expect to have conversations like this one day, but not now. I was totally not expecting it, and was just going on a wing and a prayer!!!
Me: "God sent his son Jesus for us. He also sent us the Bible which is His word, and that is the proof to us that He will provide for us. It is in His word."
Lily:"So God won't talk to us"
Me: "Not now, but when we get to Heaven you can ask Him anything you want to, and talk to Him about ANYTHING."
That was the end of the conversation. She was done at this point. I was blown away, and to be honest, I had to replay every word in my head, just to make sure I didn't say anything wrong. Anyway, I just everyone might find this little conversation interesting. I did!!!!

this sounds like a conversation that would be difficult for anyone...i know that I sometimes worry when I talk to my friends about God and Jesus and salvation that I worry whether i am saying the right things...it must be doubly hard for your own child...It sounds to me like you did just fine though...however, i'm really not qualified to really comment on that...it'll be another 10 years or so! :)
